Dams cause species extinctions

Aug 5th, 2009 by admin | 0

A study by leading environmental scientists says “the Earth is experiencing its sixth great extinction and Australia, along with its Pacific neighbours, is in danger of perpetuating its record as one of the worst destroyers of animal and plant species. SMH 29/7/09.

Lead author Dr Richard Kingsford from the University of New South Wales has told the ABC’s AM programme (29/7/09) that “Land clearing, logging, building dams, diverting water out of rivers, bottom trawling in marine areas, over-exploitation of our fisheries are having huge impacts. These are the major impacts. So basically we need some policies that encourage sustainable industries.”Cartoon by Chris Madden, www.chrismadden.co.uk
