Community & media slam dam

Tillegra protest imageFrom Letters to the editor, newspaper editorials and articles, political opposition, to almost nightly TV reports and in-depth commentary, the combined attack against the proposed Tillegra Dam can only send one message to Hunter Water Corporation and Water Minister Costa. Reconsider an ill-founded project.

Just a taste…

Useless Hunter dam all lies and statistics

Hunter Water’s case for the Tillegra dam has been shown again to be a sham (”Dam critics cry foul over river flows in Hunter”, September 6). As a for-profit corporation, Hunter Water naturally seeks to maximise its asset. One option is to build an unnecessary dam on one of the state’s few remaining ecologically healthy rivers and inundate thousands of hectares of precious agricultural land. There is no case for it. Rainfall is increasing, domestic consumption is decreasing and we have had no water restrictions for decades. The central coast has secured an adequate water supply. The state government has a conflict of interest and is opting to maximise Hunter Water’s potential for profit rather than protecting the Hunter’s ecological and agricultural asset. It is heartening to know the alternative premier has vowed not to build the dam.

Despite Hunter Water’s best efforts to run down water storages, there is no water shortage in the Hunter. Water shortages will not be an election issue in March, but the Tillegra dam will.
Linda Bowden Munni

The managing director of Hunter Water, Kevin Young, should stop the cover-ups and forced justifications of the expensive and unnecessary Tillegra dam. Then Hunter Water might find time to properly manage the water supply, protect the river system and improve water conservation and recycling – saving Hunter residents the $477 million Tillegra bill.
