International scrutiny of Tillegra

Nov 17th, 2010 by The Wilderness Society | 0

The Guardian UK’s Biodiversity 100 list has identified 100 things governments across the globe must address in order to show they are serious about protecting biodiversity.

“A halt to construction of large scale dams is smack bang in the middle of the list, identified by scientists as one of the greatest threats to wetland and river biodiversity. The international list specifically identifies Tillegra Dam as a dam which must be stopped” says Justin McKee, campaigner for The Wilderness Society.

The Biodiversity 100 list was released in time for the United Nations COP10 conference on biodiversity in Nagoya, Japan.

“This international attention against the NSW Government’s proposed Tillegra Dam follows the release of further evidence that dams do not fit into the picture of nature conservation, and are an outdated and damaging form of water management” says Justin McKee.
