Traveston Dam Damned!

Nov 11th, 2009 by admin | 0

No Tillegra Dam Group welcomes the announcement by Mr. Peter Garrett today that the Traveston Crossing Dam should not proceed. Spokesperson for the No Tillegra Dam Group , Sally Corbett said:

“Mr Garrett has made a decision firmly based on the science, and we welcome his condemnation of this project.”

“The proposed Tillegra Dam will also be scrutinised by Mr. Garrett’s Department under the Environmental Protection Biodiversity and Conservation Act. This will be the only way that the Tillegra Dam proposal will get an open and independent environmental assessment”.

“By acknowledging the huge environmental , social and economic damage a dam causes Mr. Garrett opens the way to better and smarter thinking for water management.”

“We also congratulate Minister Garrett for recognising the importance of our freshwater ecosystems. Freshwater ecosystems around the globe are the most degraded and depleted of all our ecosystems. It has been estimated that 63% of freshwater fish species are endangered, overwhelmingly from loss of habitat due to the effects of dams”.

“We also congratulate the dedicated members and supporters of the ‘Save The
Mary River’ campaign. It just shows what can be achieved when communities and the local councils that represent them pull together.  NSW Government Ministers – stand up and take notice”.
