Leading Water Experts to Discuss Tillegra Proposal

Mar 30th, 2008 by admin | 0

Australia’s leading water experts are heading to the Hunter to discuss the Tillegra Dam issue. Some of the nation’s leading water experts will be guest speakers at the Wise Ways to Water Weekend at Wangat Lodge April 11-13. This forum is hosted by the No Tillegra Dam Group (NTDG) and sponsored by Wangat Lodge, an independent education facility for sustainability and wildlife refuge.

The Wise Ways to Water Weekend is a collaborative opportunity for the public, environmental and water experts and other concerned people to discuss the issues of the proposed Tillegra Dam. The weekend will look at all aspects of the proposed Tillegra Dam from water management, environmental, social, economic, sustainability, ecological and geotechnical stand points, to get a complete overview of the issues at hand.

Speakers will include:

  • Dr Simon Fane, Research Director, Institute for Sustainable Futures (University of Technology Sydney)
  • Dr Charles Essery, Sustainable Water Solutions Pty Ltd, former Senior Executive Advisor to the NSW Government on town water treatment and recycling water, Adjunct Professor School of Engineering (University of Western Sydney)
  • Mr Martin Babakhan, climate change and weather (School of Behavioural Sciences, University of Newcastle)
  • Dr Hugh Jones, freshwater ecologist

Attendees will take part in a number of activities and presentations over the weekend including:

  • tours of the proposed dam site and inundation area
  • site visits to properties which will be absorbed by the dam
  • presentations by speakers
  • group discussions
  • spotlight platypus expeditions at Tillegra inundation areas
  • frogging expedition
  • closed session for leaders and experts; and strategy meeting

More information can be found on this page.

The Wise Ways to Water Weekend is an opportunity for not only industry experts and locals to learn more on the area, the proposed dam, water management alternatives and to have the opportunity to have their say on the issues, but it gives the broader public the chance to get a holistic view of a very important issue that will have a major effect on NSW.

The proposed site for Tillegra Dam is located approximately 230km north of Sydney on the Upper Williams River in the Dungog Shire Council. The estimated cost of the dam’s construction is approximately $340 million however due to geological instabilities in the area this cost is set to rise considerably.
